Our Services

Introduction

  • We treat a wide variety of conditons

As a certified member of the American Animal Hospital Association, http://www.healthypet.com , we offer more than simple vaccine services. Our team of veterinarians are able to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions; through close observation, regular blood and urine testing, and appropriate medication, many conditions and diseases can be controlled.

Some of the most common diseases we encounter in our hospital include: Cushing's Disease, Addison's Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Feline Urologic Syndrome, Cardiomyopathy, Epilepsy, Cancer, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. If you wish to learn more about these conditions, please visit the Illness Feature on our homepage.

Services

  • Annual Physicals & Immunizations

Each year your dog or cat is given a complete physical examination. Beginning from the time they are puppies and kittens, our veterinarians evaluate the overall health of your pet. Based on the findings of this yearly exam your pet is "cleared" to receive his or her vaccinations.

    A complete Physical Examination includes:

•Listening to the heart to evaluate rate and rhythm, and to the lungs for quality of breath sounds

•Checking eyes for proper pupil responses, evidence of retinal changes and general brightness

•Examining ears to view the condition of the ear canal and ear drum

•Checking for dental disease such as caries and gingivitis or other gum disease

•Palpating or feeling abdomen for proper size and texture of internal organs

•Evaluating condition of skin and coat for hydration, allergies and fleas

•Discussing blood work and/or urinalysis for dogs over 7 years of age and cats over 10 years of age

•Listening carefully to you about any changes in your pets' general well-being since the last visit

  • Nutritional Guidence

Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet. Our trained and certified staff is available to help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active.

  • Dental Care

We offer professional dental care for your pets. Whether they need routine cleaning and polishing or severe plaque and tartar removal, our highly skilled staff and modern equipment are excellent for the job. We have professional dental tools which include an ultrasonic scaling machine that enables us to easily scrape tartar away and clean under the gum line. In addition, we use high-speed polishing equipment that allows us to smooth the surface of a tooth after cleaning-an important, often overlooked step in pet dentistry.

All dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia so that the best results may be achieved. Many animals, especially those that are older or have medical conditions receive pre-anesthetic blood screening prior to the procedure. Since dental disease can lead to further medical problems due to the constant showering of bacteria through your pet's system we strongly encourage home dental care and regular preventative dental cleanings.

  • Radiology

Our Digital X-ray system enables us to evaluate your pet for a variety of conditions. Examples of things that can be seen on X-rays are: bladder or kidney stones, foreign objects such as tennis balls, bone fractures, asthma, abnormal organ size or shape, and tumors.

Many dogs and cats are calm enough to be X-rayed without the use of tranquilization or anesthesia. However, for the safety of both animal and technician, sometimes it is necessary. Our veterinarians evaluate the X-rays. As a secondary measure we have board certified radiologists review them together with our doctors in bi-monthly radiology rounds.

The American Kennel Club, www.akc.org , recommends that breeding dogs have hips and elbows screened for dysplasia by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), www.offa.org. An evaluation is made from an X-ray taken while the dog is under general anesthesia. Sedation is necessary to ensure the correct alignment of the spine and pelvis.

LGD&C processes and evaluates X-rays. Sometimes an X-ray does not reveal a problem area well enough, and a better image is necessary. This is when an ultrasound is indicated. This is non-painful or invasive. Board certified radiologists travel to our hospital and perform ultrasounds at our request. They issue a written evaluation as well as a hard copy image. As with X-ray, most animals can lay still for an ultrasound without sedation.

  • Ultrasound

This non-invasive, state-of-the-art imaging technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs. Board-certified radiologists are called in to perform these ultrasounds. Pregnancy exams are also available.

  • Laboratory Analysis

There are many blood and urine tests available to help us determine the cause of a variety of illnesses. We may test to either "rule in" or "rule out" particular condition. The more common tests can be performed in the hospital, with results available immediately. Other, more complex tests, are sent to a local certified laboratory. These results are usually available within 1-2 days. Biopsy or cytology results take about 3-5 days.

Our hospital does not treat pocket pets: hamsters, rabbits, etc. . NOTE: Please visit our LINKS page for referrals.

  • Microchipping

Microchips have helped reunite thousands of pets with their families. We offer the most widely used microchip product to increase the chances of a safe recovery.

LDG&C provides opportunities for our clients to receive mobile veterinary services. Our Vet Van is equipped to travel to your home for physical examinations, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and minor procedures. We can also dispense medications, flea control and heartworm prevention. This service is ideal for clients with multiple pets and for those who have difficulty getting around town.

One of the most caring mobile services we provide is humane euthanasia at home. Many of our clients find great comfort in knowing that their pets are in familiar, loving surroundings. It is always our goal to provide pets a peaceful and dignified passing, and pet owners with piece of mind.

Please contact our Reception desk, for more information on scheduling and pricing. There are a limited number of opportunities each month that this service is available.

The next round of adolescent classes begin Sunday, September 13th, 2009. Please call to get signed up!

Though the majority of behavior questions are related to dogs, we can also provide information on cat behavior problems such as inappropriate urination, destructive behavior, and aggression.

Please contact Sandi  via  phone #(408) 354-2292 dogteacher@losgatosvet.com

Travel Certificates

  • Health Certificates

Pet-friendly travels are increasingly popular, accessible and affordable.

Most air-lines require a Health Certificate be obtained from your Veterinarian no more than 10 days prior to flight. This form provides air-service personel with information crucial to ensuring your pets' saftey (such as current vaccines and tolerance to extremes in temperature).

While mandated for air-travel, Health Certificates are also advised for auto-travel (in the event you need to unexpectedly board your pet and/or locate emergency medical care).

Please note that special restrictions/conditions and even Quarantine (up to 6months) may be required for international travel. Current regulations can be obtained from Consulate offices and often involve months of planning.

The LGD&C team is happy to assist with Health Certificates within the United States, Canada and Mexico. Otherwise, please contact the following pet travel professionals:

Surgery

  • SURGERY

General Surgery                                                                           Our hospital has a full surgery suite consisting of a heated surgery table, oxygen tank, inhaled gas anesthesia machine, apnea monitor, pulse oximeter, electrocardiogram machine, and blood pressure equipment. Our veterinarians perform a broad spectrum of general surgical procedures including dental work, spays and neuters, hernia repairs and growth removals using sterile technique.

Major Surgery                                                                                If your pet has a serious condition that requires major surgery such as a splenectomy (to remove a ruptured spleen), enterotomy (to remove a foreign object such as a tennis ball), or ear resection (open ear canal on chronically infected ear) you can be assured that our team of veterinarians and technicians will take the best care with your pet before, during and after the surgery.

Each surgical patient is evaluated by the veterinarian for anesthetic risk prior to surgery. And in every surgery a technician monitors anesthesia using all of the equipment mentioned as well as their trained eyes and ears.

We believe in pain management for our patients, and provide both pre & post-operative analgesia. Educating our clients on post-operative home care is equally essential.

  • Orthopedic Surgery

Our practice sees a wide variety of orthopedic conditions. Very active lifestyles, trauma, and age related changes all present us with different challenges. Depending on the type of condition, there are many treatment modalities available ranging from rehabilitation and surgery, to pain management and dietary supplementation.

Young, exuberant (usually large breed dogs) can tear their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) - the famous football player injury. A luxating patellar (trick knee) is a condition seen mostly in smaller breed dogs. Surgical repair is generally the recommended treatment option for these two problems. Trauma caused by moving cars and falls from high places can cause fractures that may require either rest, splint/cast, muscle rehabilitation or surgical repair. And as dogs age and arthritis becomes a factor, minimizing pain and discomfort, as well as lubricating joints are key components of treatment.

We have a full complement of hardware and necessary tools to assist your pet with his or her orthopedic needs.

Dr. Frandle has many years of experience involving all types of orthopedic injuries. Several other of our veterinarians are likewise gaining valuable experience in this area also. If you would prefer the services of a board certified orthopedic surgeon, we are happy to assist in refering you.

Specialists

  • SPECIALISTS

Our hospital values the relationship we have with local Veterinary specialists. Furthermore, we believe that a second opinion can be very beneficial.

When one of our patient's care exceeds the scope of our general practice we consult with and often refer their owners to board certified specialists who have advanced training in such areas as Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedic Surgery.

While any of our patients are being treated by a Specialist, great care is taken by both hospitals to update one another on a regular basis. Most specialists see patients on the basis of referral only, which does not have to be a road block for our clients and their pets. We will always be happy to offer the option of seeing a specialist.

In addition, we are happy to discuss Aquatic, Chiropractic, or Holistic therapeutic options.
