Dogs thrive when leadership is clear and consistent. Because it is easy to send confusing messages, we have prepared the following partial list of guidelines.

Socialization is the repeated exposure to new people, animals, situations and noises in a non-threatening manner. It is the key to a happy, confident adult dog. A well-socialized pup develops confidence and is less likely to be fearful.

Puppies that have been regularly handled are more likely to respect the leadership role of their owners, and to be confident adult dogs.

Gentling is the act of mildly restraining a puppy in an effort to teach him to be comfortable in submissive positions with you, as the alpha dog, in charge.
